What do a couple of hungry girls do when it's lunchtime but find themselves too languid to step a foot outside the office to find food? Answer: get food delivered. News of a food shop serving hefty sandwiches caught our ears and, naturally, we just had to have a taste to satisfy both our appetite and our curiosity.
The Plaid Sandwich Co. has been wowing corporate people and sandwich lovers with its variety of sandwiches since April 28, 2003. Inspired by Pret A Manger (read: French for "Ready To Eat") in the United Kingdom, this exceptional sandwich spot puts new twists on regular sandwiches everyone knows and loves while making sure to serve food that's healthful and non-greasy. And who can resist quirkily-named creations such as Pastrami Whammy or Crabby Wabby?
We tucked into Catch Of The Day--white meat fish fillet, Provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato on foccacia bread--and The Classic BLT--maple bacon, Swiss cheese, lettuce, and tomato on multi-grain bread. The Swiss cheese was a good update on an old favorite, but the bacon (in spite of a specific request to the contrary) was not as crispy as we'd hoped.
One of the current bestsellers on their organic, strictly-no-preservatives menu is the Roast Beef Redux--roast beef with gravy, Swiss cheese, grilled onions, lettuce and tomato on focaccia bread--and we can see (or rather, taste) why. In it were satisfyingly thick slices of fresh roast beef, a refreshing change from other sandwiches that attempt to cover up the beef's thinness with a smothering of other condiments. We also recommend their Fresh-squeezed Fruit Juices, which are made daily with dalanghita and calamansi.
Plaid currently has two branches--the main branch at the ground floor of The Orient Square Building in Ruby Road and a kiosk at the fourth level of The Podium. The main branch delivers only in the Pasig-Ortigas area. Just make sure you're not too far away; you wouldn't wanna wear out the person who delivers the food on foot! From 7PM onwards, customers enjoy a 30% discount, and whatever is left at the end of the work day is donated to the Unang Hakbang Foundation.
